Our approach with Restylane® is informed by the latest advancements in aesthetic medicine, focusing on delivering personalized care. We strive to offer treatments that can help you feel rejuvenated, with an emphasis on natural-looking results.
What Is Restylane®?
Restylane® is formulated as a clear, hyaluronic acid (HA)-based gel, designed to closely resemble the HA that your body naturally produces. This treatment is effective in visibly diminishing moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and it’s also used for restoring lost facial volume.
How Does Restylane® Work?
Restylane® works by using hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that can be found in your skin, eyes, and joints. Over time, skin loses hyaluronic acid, resulting in reduced volume and hydration. This can increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When injected, Restylane® gel integrates into the dermal tissue providing instant volume and attracting water molecules.
What Are the Treatment Areas for Restylane®?
- Lips: Restylane® injections can enhance the fullness of the lips, adding shape and definition where desired. This filler is adept at creating symmetry and can also smooth out the lines around the mouth for a refreshed look.
- Cheeks: Injecting Restylane® into the cheeks helps restore volume lost with age, providing a lifted appearance and enhancing the natural contour of the face.
- Under-eyes: Restylane® is effective in rejuvenating the under-eye area by mitigating the appearance of dark circles and hollows, which often contribute to a tired look.
- Chin: By adding structure and definition, Restylane® can sculpt the chin area, bringing balance to facial features and improving the profile.
- Marionette Lines: Restylane® smooths out these lines that extend downward from the corners of the mouth, creating a more youthful and pleasant resting expression.
- Nasolabial Folds: This treatment softens the appearance of these folds, which stretch from the nose to the mouth corners, helping to refresh the lower face.
- Hands: A Restylane® treatment can also rejuvenate the hands by restoring lost volume and reducing the prominence of veins and tendons.

The Restylane® Treatment Process
As convenient and discrete as Restylane® treatment is, it’s still a cosmetic procedure, meaning every patient needs to undergo a consultation prior to receiving their first injection.
Consultation
During an initial consultation, we will carefully review several key factors pertinent to delivering a safe and successful treatment, including the following:
- Your medical history and current health status (including medication use)
- Your aesthetic concerns and goals
- Your expectations of treatment
- Where you want the treatment applied
As we’ll detail further below, the majority of people in reasonably good health will qualify for Restylane® treatment, but there are some conditions and other concerns that may affect your eligibility. A consultation is also important for establishing healthy expectations of treatment, as even those who qualify for the treatment (including presenting with aesthetics concerns that Restylane® is indicated for) may not benefit if they don’t have a clear sense of the results they can expect.
Treatment
When it’s time for treatment, the process is intuitively simple. Once you are ready for the treatment and comfortably positioned, we will clean the treatment area and apply any topical anesthetics as necessary. Then, we administer the Restylane® injections using a fine needle, gently massaging the filler as needed to distribute it throughout the tissue. Restylane® then goes to work, perfusing through the tissue as it immediately smooths wrinkles, including marionette lines. Depending on the number of areas being treated, Restylane® injection can take as little as 10-15 minutes or as much as 45 minutes.
Immediately After Treatment
Once the final injection has been administered, we will briefly monitor the entire treatment area(s) to ensure that the skin reacts well. Some swelling and redness is normal, and typically resolves soon after your non-surgical wrinkle treatment. You will be issued personalized aftercare instructions, including the use of cold compresses to manage swelling, avoiding sun exposure and extreme temperatures for at least 48 hours, sleeping and positioning tips, and other guidelines.
Once you’re ready to leave, there is virtually no downtime and no heavy lifestyle modification required outside of the above recommendations. You can take yourself home and continue your routine.
Restylane® Vs Other Dermal Fillers
Restylane® is one of several dermal fillers powered by hyaluronic acid, and there are plenty of other alternatives that use different compounds. While there is plenty of overlap among most popular fillers in terms of issues treated, aesthetic benefits, and other factors, each has its own unique applications and drawbacks.
Restylane® vs Juvederm: Both of these fillers contain hyaluronic acid, but they differ in terms of texture, which bears importance in how they are used. Juvederm is more gel-like, which enables it to address larger areas. Restylane® is slightly granular, which is highly effective for adding structure and volume to the skin.
Restylane® vs Radiesse: Instead of hyaluronic acid, Radiesse is made from calcium hydroxylapatite. This material acts as a scaffold for the skin, which can produce long-term results. Restylane® is typically more affordable and versatile.
Restylane® vs Sculptra: Sculptra is formulated with poly-L-lactic acid, which encourages collagen production. Both Restylane® and Sculptra can address hollowed areas and fine lines effectively, but Restylane® offers immediate results. Sculptra takes time to produce results, as the collagen fibers need time to proliferate and mature.
Can Restylane® Be Paired With Other Treatments?
Yes, Restylane® and other dermal fillers are very commonly paired with various cosmetic treatments as part of a comprehensive anti-aging treatment plan. These treatments include chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and neuromodulator injections like Botox, to name some of the most common pairings.
It’s important to note that sequencing, timing, and individualized factors all come into play when creating a non-surgical wrinkle treatment plan that incorporates both Restylane® and one or more of the above treatments. Chemical peels and laser treatments, for example, are typically not recommended in the 2-3 weeks following your last Restylane® injection.
Speaking of chemical peels, this is one of the most popular treatments to pair up with dermal fillers for its perfectly complementary effects. While Restylane® adds a volume boost and smoothes wrinkles, chemical peels resurface the skin for a completely rejuvenated appearance. Laser resurfacing treatments produce a similar dual effect when combined with Restylane. If you’re wondering how to get rid of marionette lines and other common instances of fine lines while also focusing on a broader area, these combinations are key.
Finally, neuromodulator injections are highly effective at significantly reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles (those that form with repeated muscle contractions), which creates a naturally youthful appearance. Volumizing the lips and/or filling out under-eye bags and sunken cheeks with Restylane® is an excellent way to complement the aesthetic benefits of neuromodulators.
Who Should Not Use Restylane?
Restylane® is a non-surgical wrinkle treatment that is safe for and well-tolerated by the vast majority of people in reasonably good health.
Some issues that can impact your eligibility include:
- Active skin infection in or around the treatment area
- Bleeding disorders
- Compromised immunity
- Allergies to ingredients used in the treatment
- Keloid scarring tendency
- Some chronic illnesses
Your goals, as well as your expectation of the treatment, are also highly relevant in determining whether or not you are an ideal candidate for Restylane® injections. Even if you are cleared for the treatment medically speaking, if your expectations aren’t aligned with what Restylane® can do, you may not be satisfied with the result.
Finally, we will determine in the initial consultation whether or not your particular aesthetic concerns are best addressed by Restylane. If necessary, we may recommend alternative or additional treatments to deliver the results you’re looking for.
Frequently Asked Questions About Restylane®
How Long Does Restylane® Last?
While Restylane® results can last anywhere from 6-18 months, this isn’t the same for everyone. You might have results that last a longer or shorter amount of time based on your skin type, lifestyle, and the area treated. Periodic follow-up treatments can help maintain the desired level of correction. Standard skin care practices (regular cleansing, moisturizing, etc.) are also important for preserving and prolonging your Restylane® results.
How Soon Will I See Restylane® Filler Results?
Patients typically observe immediate improvements with Restylane® filler after their treatment. The full effect usually settles in within one to two weeks, as any potential swelling or bruising diminishes.
What Is the Post-Treatment Care for a Restylane® Treatment?
After a Restylane® treatment, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and extensive sun or heat exposure for the first 24 hours. It’s recommended to keep the treated area clean and to not touch or rub injection sites. Our team can provide additional recommendations relating to proper sleep positioning and other lifestyle modifications pertinent to your situation in person.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments needed will depend on your personal goals and the initial response to the filler. Some patients achieve their desired outcome with a single treatment, while others may require follow-up treatments for optimal results. A personalized treatment plan will be developed during your consultation.
